A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

Caramel - my introduction to programming and game development. I started work on Caramel in 2024 on Godot, but quickly realized I was in over my head and took an indefinite break from "game development". I returned to the project in 2025, this time on Unity, and worked on-and-off for a combined total of maybe 500 hours. This is the end result.

I'll be the first to say that as a result of that many hours of work, it might not look like much. The game suffers a great deal from spaghetti code and insanely inefficient workflows. I'm proud to say that I've fixed a lot of it in the final month or so, but such infrastructure-related issues are ones that are impossible to completely fix after a certain period of time has passed. A lesson learnt.

As for the game, it suffers from too much text, too little actual gameplay. The combat is fun and rewarding, but the fact that I really needed to be done with this project made it difficult to balance it properly, and with only myself as a playtester, there was only so much that I could do. The parry system works perfectly, but is rendered pretty much useless for 80% of the game because there's nothing stopping you from just spamming attacks and beating enemies that way. It's funny because the last 20% of the game relies almost extensively on parrying, and is a very big difficulty jump from the beginning of the game. All this to say, the game design needs some work. Level design is alright, but often the game feels like a puppet show walking simulator. The writing is funny though (has to be - I wrote it), if a little on the nose.

I'm just glad this thing is finally out.

In honor of my cat, Caramel.

Enjoy!
